UMARKED GRAVES DEDICATION CEREMONY FOR FIVE VETERANS IN SWIFT CURRENT, SK

On 9 July 2026, a ceremony was held in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, to dedicate the installation of permanent markers for five former serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces, undertaken through the Last Post Fund’s Unmarked Graves Program.

The Last Post Fund and Branch 56 of the Royal Canadian Legion formally unveiled the five granite military headstones at the Field of Honour at Swift Current’s Mount Pleasant Cemetery. 

The new markers replace temporary wooden crosses, to permanently honour the military service of these veterans.  They are:

  • Private Robert Fraser(Royal Canadian Infantry Corps)
  • Sergeant Jack Ross(Royal Canadian Air Force)
  • Sapper Metro Rushoway(Royal Canadian Engineers)
  • Private Edward Schulz(South Saskatchewan Regiment)
  • Private Herman Unger(Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps)

The installation of the permanent markers was the result of the extensive research into archives and military records carried out by Last Post Fund member and researcher Major Brad Hrycyna, Retired, over a three-year period.

The senior VIPs in attendance were the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, the Honourable Bernadette McIntyre and His Worship Al Bridal, Mayor of Swift Current, both strong supporters of the program.  Close to 100 people attended the ceremony, including the relatives of Private Herman Unger.

This poignant and moving ceremony truly captured the essence of what the Last Post Fund and its Unmarked Graves Program are all about.  Branch 56 did an outstanding job of designing and executing the ceremony, which was covered by national media.  And of course, we extend sincere appreciation to Major Brad Hrycyna, for his continued efforts in support of our mission.
